2019 Billboard Music Awards: Who Won and Who Didn’t

For the second year in a row, the well known Kelly Clarkson host the Billboard music awards. That’s right, on May 1 the 2019 Billboard music awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Featuring performances from artist like the Jonas Brothers, who performed two of the brother’s hits and the band’s newest song “Sucker”, Kelly Clarkson who performed a medley of 13 popular songs, Taylor Swift performing her new hit single for the first time, and so many more. This year’s awards ceremony was a blast to watch. Not only were there outstanding performances, but there were also over 50 awards given out.

The ACM Awards in Case You Missed It

For all you country fans out there, you probably already knew about the ACM Awards. They were held on Sunday, April 7th at 8pm PDT. This was the 54th annual Academy of Country Music Awards. They were hosted by Reba McEntire for the 16th time. The event was held at the beautiful Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas

Reba is a wonderful host and had a lot of jokes to tell. She brought up the fact that it had recently snowed in Las Vegas saying “ It was so cold it froze us women out of entertainer of the year”. Later in the show, McEntire joked about some of the interesting duets in music now, many between country and hip-hop/pop artists. She joked that she and Cardi B would be making a song titled, “There’s No ‘U’ in Oklahoma and That’s Okuurrrtt with Me,” playing with Cardi’s infamous catchphrase.

The show opened with a performance by Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean, who preformed their hit “Can’t Hide Red”.

Why Band Students Aren’t Feeling Very “Excellent”

On March 7th, a long-awaited Band field trip took advanced band students to Kennedy High School. This wasn’t just any regular field trip, it was a band festival.

To those of you who aren’t in band, a festival is a field trip in which the band students go to get “graded,” if you will, on how well they play.

The bus came and took the students during first lunch with all of them having butterflies in their stomachs.

When the band students arrived at Kennedy High School for the festival, they were sent to unpack their instruments and practice in a large waiting/practice room. The students practiced their three songs, “Bryce Canyon” “Overture,” “Gentle Winds,” and “Latin Fire.” After the practice room, they were ready to go on stage in front of the judges.

1-” Eastside”-  Benny Blanco, Halsey, and Khalid

“Eastside” was written by Benny Blanco, Halsey, Khalid, Ed Sheeran, and Nathan Perez. The song and the music video released on July 12th, 2018. This song got so popular it became top 10 in Ireland, Australia, Scotland, New Zealand, and the US.

2 –  “Without Me”- Halsey

“Without Me” is a song by American singer Halsey. The song was released through Capitol Records on October 4, 2018. The song was written about the regrets Halsey had after a romantic relationship she previously had.

3 – “Thank U Next” – Ariana Grande

“Thank U, Next”  is a song by singer Ariana Grande, released as the lead single from her fifth studio album. Lyrically, the song reflects on Grande’s past relationships. Like her past fiance Pete Davidson.

4 –  “Sunflower” – Post Malone

“Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)”, more commonly known simply as “Sunflower”, is a song performed by American rappers Post Malone and Swae Lee for the soundtrack to the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The song was released as a single on October 18, 2018. It became Malone’s third and Lee’s first song as the top the Billboard Hot 100.

Shawn Mendes’ New Album

Shawn Mendes is a well known nineteen-year-old singer who has gained a large amount of popularity from Vine (RIP VINE). Following his popularity on Vine came his two albums and sold out tours. Well anyone who is a part of the Mendes Army (ME) would know about the constant commotion on when his third album, SM3, would be coming out. Well, you can get your hopes up even more after reading this article about how he has gotten the track list out, as well as the official release date and the pre-order form.

That’s right, SM3 is out on May 25th, with songs featuring Julia Michaels and Khalid. The album’s title is. . . (Drum roll please). . .Shawn Mendes the album! Isn’t that just so original? The tracklist obviously includes “In My Blood” and “Lost In Japan,” but it also incorporates unreleased songs titled:

Band: Superior?

Did you wonder where band when on March 7th?

On Wednesday the 7th, and Thursday the 8th, the band kids were on their way to Kennedy High School for a festival. Three bands were put into two bands and were judged on performance and music as well as sight reading.

The festival was run by Southern California School Band Orchestra Association. Last year, Mr. Woodruff had put the year’s awards in the office. They were the highest rank! The students were to perform at 2:30.

According to the latest Billboard Top 100, these are your top ten songs for the week.

Tenth place: “Stir Fry” by Migos. We welcome this funky bop with open arms. It can be said that it is funkier and more rhythmically complex than any song Migos had previously tackled.

Ninth place: “All The Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Last week it was in place 31, it has certainly risen to the top. It is most recognizable from the new Marvel blockbuster, Black Panther.

Musical Mondays 2018!

The Cougar Chronicle has many series such as, “Ask Sam,” “Would You Make That Deal,” “Publication Posse,” “What Even Is,” “I Will Never Do Better Than This- Quang Truong’s Horrific Guide to This Week’s “Useful” News,” but one of many student’s favorites was “Musical Mondays,” originally run by Tyler Serrano, now a 10th-grader at Marina High School. It was then taken up by current ninth graders Delaney Powell and Justin Pham (also at Marina), and is now being brought back to life! Here goes.

According to Billboard Top 100, this is the hot top ten for this week in February 2018.

Tenth place: “Thunder,” by Imagine Dragons. This “bopping” song was most recognized from the popular TV show, Riverdale. in the iconic Alice Cooper glow up scene.
